Code Typing Speed Test
Prose typing tests don't measure what programmers type all day: brackets, operators, camelCase and indentation. Type the snippet as fast and accurately as you can.
Indentation is filled in after Enter, like in an editor · Fix mistakes with Backspace · Esc restarts
How WPM is calculated
One "word" is 5 characters, the standard used by typing tests. WPM counts only correctly typed characters, so speed you gain from typos doesn't count. Accuracy is the share of your keystrokes that were correct the first time, including ones you later fixed with Backspace.
What's a good code typing speed?
Code is slower to type than prose because of symbols and capitalisation. 30–40 WPM is typical, 50+ is fast, and 70+ is exceptional. Accuracy matters more than raw speed: every typo is a bug or a broken build waiting to happen.
How to get faster
- Practise the symbol row (
{ } [ ] ( ) ; = > <) without looking at the keyboard. - Use both Shift keys: the opposite hand presses Shift.
- Learn your editor's shortcuts and snippets. The fastest code is the code you don't type.
